I cannot believe this is radio.

I bought the Marantz ST7001 to fit into my hi-fi system after trying another, inexpensive digital tuner. My thought was to have the radio in the house sound as good as the radio in my car. I did not want to spend four figures on a radio component, which put Magnum Dynalab and Fanfare out of my league. I also did not want to make a hobby out of fussing with the technical details of radio. Thus, the many outstanding vintage tuners were of limited interest.

I did some research before buying this tuner. One important thing I learned was that antennas are important and that your tuner is only as good as its reception.

At the time of my decision I was aware of the following competitive mid-priced (under $500) component tuners available in the US market:

1. Marantz ST7001 - Reviewed as a little less detailed than some but with a fuller sound.

2. NAD C425 - Reviewed as highly detailed and transparent, a bit bright and thin sounding. This is consistent with what I have heard from NAD tuners.

3. Onkyo T-4555 Multi Platform Tuner - No meaningful review comments on sound quality, but reviews indicated lots of format capabilities. Sadly, they also indicated poor reliability and very bad customer service.

4. Yamaha TX-497 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Tuner - Only one review, which indicated an ordinary, cheap plastic tuner with ordinary sound.

5. Cambridge Audio 340T AM/FM Tuner - I know nothing about this tuner. I did not like the looks of it, and the absence of readily available comments from popular websites made me hesitate.

6. Denon TU-1500RD AM/FM Tuner - This is likely the closest competition to the Marantz, with one review indicating that they share some common parts. That review also indicated that the Denon is a little more detailed and has a less boomy bass, but at the expense of some warmth. I noticed that it is also has plastic panels. IMO Denon sometimes produces some very good equipment in its higher priced lines, this firm does not have the same reputation for audiophile candy that Marantz has.

7. Music Hall T25.2 AM/FM Tuner - I know nothing about this except that it is designed to aesthetically match the rest of the excellent Music Hall 25.2 system, and Music Hall is well regarded.

8. Jolida JD 402A AM/FM Tuner - Reviews indicated phenomenal potential for the knowledgeable person or the audiophile willing to swap tubes. As is consistent with Jolida's reputation in other components, there were some quality issues reported and the product was best suited to someone who doesn't mind tinkering a little bit. I mind.

Based on this research, it seemed to me that the Marantz had a premium look and well regarded sound. It was noteworthy enough to have been reviewed in several high-fi magazines in its native England, and several of the customer reviews from other tuners referred to this as a better choice, with comments like, `returned my whatever and bought the Marantz,' or `tuner X is hard to use, should be like the Marantz.' I got the impression that the Marantz had set an important standard for mid-priced tuners.

So, I bought one.

My initial efforts at antenna management have been imprecise. I connected a cheap, passive, wire type 300 ohm FM antenna (a fine example comes in the box). Then I crumpled it up, dropped it behind the credenza in a heap, and tuned in my local NPR station. NPR was broadcasting a recently recorded Dvorak symphony, and music filled the room like a CD. Instruments were precisely placed, I heard the weird fade you get in concert halls where it sounds like the walls are covered in blankets, and some dude coughed faintly to my right.

More importantly, I found the balance of the sound convincing and satisfying. When reception is good and the source broadcast is quality, this tuner sounds natural and open and full. Textures are rich and instruments sound like they should. I did not measure the sound with meters, but I have been to concerts and I know what live music sounds like. This sounds like that. Could I tell the difference with my eyes closed? Absolutely. But this radio cost less than a 6-concert pass at my local symphony orchestra ticket office.

I am totally happy with this tuner and consider it a significant bargain. The next step is to find a better antenna and really see what it can do.

I'm not a radio guy. Talk radio strikes me as little more than commercialized high-school agit-prop. The ads are ridiculous. The playlists are overly homogenous. And because I actually tend to listen to music rather than simply use it as a distraction, or as background, radio is clearly not a medium aimed at me. But still, there's NPR, there's Air America, there's the occasional demand to address the common need for something pleasant in the background while guests are present. And so in middle age I have at long last succumbed and bought my first-ever stand alone tuner. I installed the Marantz to supplant the unsatisfactory performance of the tuner section of the Linn Klassik we use as a preamp for the general household system, and the improvement is remarkable. Great functionality, near CD quality sound and -- so far -- rock solid reliability. Who would have thought that a Marantz would so easily outperform a Linn in so many ways?

I researched Home Theater Systems for 6 months and found the ratings on every system with wireless speakers to be across the board from good to bad. This included this manufacturer as well. I ended up buying this particular system based on customer feedback and the price. I am so glad I did! The setup was easy and the sound quality is excellent. The wireless speakers work great. It does take some time to absorb all the systems features and how to navigate with the remote but once you figure it out it's a breeze. I highly recommend this product.

As an audio video technician with nearly ten years experience in home theater installation and programming, I would recommend this product based on it's performance. The surround sound experience that Sony delivers with this product is extremely satisfying! I have had systems consisting of thousands of dollars that didn't deliver the enveloping movie watching experience this product does. Since Sony makes the each piece of the system, they control exactly what you get. I'm not saying that it's as feature rich or customizable as a custom home theater made up of separate components...but for what this unit does, it does it great! I must complain about the iPod dock though, it does not pull meta data from the iPod (meaning the info on your iPod doesn't show up on your TV) so you have to control the iPod manually. I would have expected the meta data functionality at this price, for $800 full retail price Sony should give you this. Finally, the limits of the system can be easily overcome by purchasing an optical switch so you can hook up all your stuff to surround sound.

This is a great sound system. I got it free with the purchase of my bravia. The wireless back speakers are amazing. The speaker setup was not easy. I watched dark knight immediately after the using the easy equalizer. The sound overwhelmed the dialogue and it ruined the first half of the movie until i manually changed it. So i would not recommend doing auto setup. I have used several systems before..pioneer, bose, and samsung.. and this stands out because it plays blu-ray and plays an ipod. A lot of people complain about how you have to manually control the ipod. Playing with the ipod rather than scrolling slowly on a tv is simpler as everyone knows how to use an ipod. Sound quality is astounding. It's just frustrating that sony uses 6ohms for their base instead of standard 8ohms (so adding klipsch or other speakers is out of the question) but i guess thats how proprietary systems work. The system has BD-LIVE so it has been updating itself here and there. Blu-rays take on average 30-45 seconds to load, which is around standard timing for this new technology. Player has bravia sync which is easy and completely reliable. Controlling your tv and sound with one remote is now possible without the use of a logitech harmony remote. Overall, I'm glad i got it for free. I definitely wouldn't pay the retail 700 dollars for it, but I believe the 500 is a good deal. IF you have any questions...feel free to ask away.

I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of install. Having read reviews of so many systems taking hours to synch and get right, this took 20 minutes and I'm not an audiophile . . . but I do follow directions. The sound is incredible and the BluRay far exceeds my expectations. We matched this with a 46" LCD HD TV and are blown away. We've tried several surround sounds systems over the years and find this home theater package better in sound. The wireless surround system sounds great but it really isn't wireless . . . there are still speaker wires from the wireless receiver to disguise, but not running wires under the carpet is worth it. Can you tell? I recommend it.Sony BDVE500W 5.1-Channel High-Definition Blu-ray Disc Player/DVD Disc Home theater System (Black)

It was easy to set-up, just took my time and followed the directions. The bass doesn't shake the walls, although I guess if it was turned up loud enough it would. I thought my Samsung TV had great sound, but after installing this I learned what a great sound is. I'm glad I got this 500 watt system, the newer 100 watt system would have been to much for me.
Blu-ray DVDs look exceptional. The DVD player also upgrades regular DVDs to near HD. They look good also. Depending on the DVD they look as good as the Blu-ray.
I particularly liked the wireless rear speakers. Although there is a rear amp with two sets of speaker wires, it sure beats having to run wires fron the front system to the rear. I have the rear amp/receiver setting behind a chair and the signal is still strong. No problems with over the air reception.
I highly recommend this system.

I just set this unit up there are a few things that are different than the description, one being that there are 2 optical digital inputs and 1 Coaxial digital input and there is 1 digital optical output and 1 Coaxial digital output. That's fine with me as I would rather have more digital optical inputs if you actually could read the back of the unit in the picture you would see that I am correct. Setting the surround sound feature with the mic is awesome, I love this gadget. The only real issue that I have is that the unit I received does not have the Sherwood name anywhere on the product/ box or manual what it does say is QG-500AVR SLS I did find that the QG stood for quick gold but not sure about the rest as of yet I am still researching it. The remote was made for someone who works for Nasa but I was able to figure out the things that I needed to use, I still have a ton to learn about the remote. I did hook up the unit and it was very easy and has great sound, but I only use the optical inputs so I don't know the sound of the rest of the inputs. I only have 5 speakers and one sub set up so I can only use the 5.1 speakers but I have another speaker on the way so that I can hook it up to use the 6.1, when I do I will update my review again.
*********UPDATE*********
Here is the responce that I got from the company on the Name not being Sherwood:
Thank you for your Amazon order.

This SLS branded receiver is a Sherwood RD-8601 receiver, it is rebranded with an SLS name. It is exactly the same as Sherwood RD-8601 except for the logo.
SLS is a high end audio company who contracted Sherwood to build these receivers for them to sell as a home theater package. You can see this home theater package here : [...] LineHomeTheater
We have no control over the pic on Amazon, it is just a listing, our listing does state that this is a rebranded receiver. We have sold hundreds and all our customers are very happy with the quality, especially seeing the low price they paid.
Let us know if you need additional assistance, we will be happy to help.
Best regards,
The Av Express Sales Team
I am still very happy with this product it has great sound and does a great job with Blueray and digital TV.
